Guest blog: How will climate change impact Wales in the future?

The Future Trends Report 2021 will feature ‘Planetary Health and Limits’ as a key driver of change for Wales’ well-being. Within this, climate change has become an independent driver of changes to our economy, society and environment, exacerbating existing risks. We are therefore pleased that our first guest blog is written by Miriam Kennedy, Senior Analyst at the Climate Change Committee, on how climate change will impact Wales’ future.

In June 2021, the Climate Change Committee published its 3rd Independent Assessment of UK Climate Risk (CCRA3), a comprehensive assessment of the priority risks and opportunities facing the UK from climate change. The report draws on an extensive programme of analysis, consultation and consideration by the Committee involving over 450 people, 130 organisations and more than 1,500 pages of evidence and analysis, compiled over three years.

Future Trends Report 2021

In the first of our blog posts on Future Trends we introduced why thinking about the future is important in planning and decision-making and how the Future Trends Report, along with other tools, can help you do this.

In this post we want to share more about the structure of the Report and provide an initial overview of the key themes emerging in the trends, and drivers of change it will feature. Over the coming months, ahead of publication, we will provide more detailed narratives of specific trends emerging around these themes. By doing this we hope the blog can be a space to continue and encourage discussions about the opportunities and challenges facing Wales in the future.

Future Trends Wales

If you have read the first of our Shaping Wales’ Future blogs, you will see that the Future Trends Report is one of the three important mechanisms under the Well-being of Future Generations Act which help us understand Wales now and in the future.

We are drafting this report for publication in December 2021 and will be using the Shaping Wales’ Future blog platform to update you on the work as it develops and shine a light on some of the trends and drivers that will feature in the final report.

Introducing the Shaping Wales’ Future Blog

Welcome to the blog. This is the first in a series of posts from the Welsh Government on some of the steps we’re taking to improve the well-being of future generations in Wales and how you can be a part of this.

The aim of this blog is to share with you the work we’re doing on developing National Milestones, updating National Indicators and developing a Future Trends Report. These are three important parts of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 that tell us about the progress we’re making towards our well-being goals and any challenges we might face on the way.
